Dr. Tania Urmee is an internationally acclaimed expert in renewable energy, energy access, and sustainable development, with over 20 years of experience in applied research, policy development, and project implementation. Her work has spanned across diverse socio-economic and geographical contexts including Bangladesh, Fiji, Samoa, Kiribati, Uganda, South Africa, Kenya, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand—making her contributions deeply rooted in cross-cultural engagement and inclusive development strategies.
A major focus of Dr. Urmee’s career has been on designing and managing renewable energy programs aimed at rural electrification and socio-economic empowerment. She was instrumental in shaping the highly successful Grameen Shakti solar PV model in Bangladesh, which used microfinance to scale energy access in off-grid rural communities. Her contributions led to the development of one of the world’s largest and most effective decentralized solar energy programs, integrating business innovation with poverty alleviation.

She currently serves as a Senior Lecturer at the School of Engineering and Information Technology, Murdoch University, Australia, where she teaches and supervises research in renewable energy systems, energy transition, and sustainability studies. She holds a PhD in Renewable Energy from Murdoch University and a Master’s in Energy Technology from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand.
Her scholarly output includes over 50 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. She is actively engaged in capacity-building and policy dialogue initiatives and regularly advises on international projects related to sustainable energy deployment, energy justice, and climate resilience.
